Guide prices for a standard single opening across Hull, East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire. Your written quote follows a free home survey and covers fitting and taking the old door away.

"How much is a new garage door?" is the first question almost everyone asks us, usually before they've decided what sort of door they want. It's a fair question, and the honest answer is that the door type sets the floor and your opening decides the rest. Below is what we actually charge, what pushes a price up, and where people tend to waste money.

We're based on Brigg Road in Barton-upon-Humber and fit doors on both banks of the Humber, from Hull, Hessle and Beverley across to Scunthorpe, Brigg and Grimsby. The figures here are ours, not national averages pulled from a website in Surrey.

What's included in a fitted price

When we quote "from £695" for an up and over door, that's the door, the frame, fitting and removal of your old door. It isn't a supply-only price with labour added on the day. Before you compare quotes, check that every one you get covers the same things:

  • The door, frame and all fixings
  • Fitting by the person who surveyed it, or at least the same firm
  • Taking away and disposing of the old door
  • Any trims or finishing needed around the opening
  • Remote handsets and safety sensors on electric doors
  • The warranty, in writing. Ours is a minimum 1 year warranty on installation work

A cheap headline price that leaves out disposal or the frame can end up costing more than a dearer quote that includes them.

Up and over doors: from £695

A steel up and over is still the cheapest way to replace a tired door, and for plenty of garages in Hull and the surrounding estates it's the sensible choice. If the garage is detached, used for storage and you open it a few times a week, there's no point paying for insulation you'll never feel.

Worth knowing

The door swings out as it opens, so you need clear space on the drive, roughly a metre in front of the opening. Retractable gear runs smoother and lasts better than canopy gear, and it's the better option if you might add a motor later. Up and over doors can be automated, but it's cheaper to decide at the start than to retrofit.

Insulated roller doors: from £895

This is the door we fit more than any other. An insulated aluminium roller coils into a box above the opening, so it doesn't swing out and doesn't take up any ceiling space inside. That suits the short drives you get on a lot of newer estates in Kingswood, Barton and Brigg, and garages where people park right up to the door.

Rollers come electric as standard, so the motor isn't an expensive extra. The foam-filled slats take the edge off the cold and the noise, which matters if the garage is attached to the house or doubles as a gym or workshop.

The trade-offs

A roller curtain can be dented by a careless reverse, and a damaged slat has to be replaced rather than knocked out. They also need power at the opening. If your garage has no socket near the door, budget for an electrician, and we'll tell you at the survey if that's the case.

Sectional doors: from £1,200

A sectional door is made of insulated horizontal panels that lift up and run back along tracks under the ceiling. It's the best-insulated and quietest of the common types, and it seals well at the bottom, which makes a difference in the wind that comes off the estuary in winter.

It costs more than a roller because there's more door. The panels are deeper and the tracks and springs are heavier. In return you get better security, lots of panel styles and colours, and a door that looks at home on a smart new-build or an integral garage.

The trade-offs

The tracks use ceiling space, so a sectional isn't ideal if you've got a loft hatch, storage racking or a low beam in the way. We measure headroom at the survey for exactly this reason. If there's not enough room, a roller usually solves it.

Side hinged doors: from £2,500

Side hinged doors open like a pair of French doors. They're the dearest of the four, mainly because most are made to measure in timber, steel or GRP. People choose them for older properties where looks matter, for garages used as workshops where you want to nip in through one leaf, and for openings where there's no headroom for anything else.

What pushes the price up

Size of the opening

Our guide prices are for a standard single. Wide singles and doubles cost more, and an odd-sized opening means a made-to-measure door. A lot of older garages around Hull and Grimsby were built before standard sizes settled down, so it's worth getting it measured properly rather than guessing.

Colour, finish and glazing

White and the common greys are cheapest. Woodgrain finishes, special RAL colours, windows and decorative panels all add to the price. It's money well spent if the door is the first thing people see from the street. It's wasted on a block of garages round the back.

The state of the opening

Rotten timber frames, crumbling brick reveals or an uneven floor need sorting before a new door goes in, or it won't seal and it won't last. We'll point it out at the survey and include it in the quote, rather than finding it on fitting day.

Automation and power

Rollers are already electric. On sectional and up and over doors, adding a motor at the time of fitting is much cheaper than coming back for it later. If there's no power in the garage, that's the most common hidden cost, so check before you get quotes.

Repair or replace?

Not every tired door needs replacing. A snapped spring or a frayed cable is a repair job, and our call-out starts from £30. We'd rather fix a sound door than sell you a new one you don't need. Replacement makes more sense when the panel is rusting through, the frame is rotten, parts are no longer made, or you're paying for the same fault every winter. Our repair cost guide and how long garage doors last go into this in more detail.

How to get an accurate quote

Online prices, ours included, are a starting point. The number that counts is the one you get after someone has measured the opening, checked the headroom and looked at the frame. Here's how we do it:

  • Call us on 01652 638149 or send photos of your current door on WhatsApp to 07738 234584
  • We give you a rough idea on the phone, then book a free home survey
  • You get a written, itemised quote with no obligation and no pressure
  • Most installations are done in a single day, with the old door taken away

Frequently asked questions

How much does a new garage door cost in Hull?▾

Fitted prices from Selcce start at £695 for a steel up and over door, £895 for an electric insulated roller door, £1,200 for a sectional door and £2,500 for a side hinged door. The final price depends on the size of the opening, the finish and the condition of the frame, and is confirmed in writing after a free home survey.

Is an insulated roller door worth the extra over an up and over?▾

If the garage is attached to the house, used as a workshop or gym, or you have a short drive, usually yes. A roller doesn't swing out, comes electric as standard and the insulated slats keep out cold and noise. For a detached storage garage opened a few times a week, a steel up and over is often all you need.

Does the price include removing my old garage door?▾

Yes. Our fitted prices include the door, frame, fitting and taking away the old door. Always check that other quotes include disposal and the frame before comparing.

How long does it take to fit a new garage door?▾

Most single garage doors are fitted in one day. Made-to-measure doors, unusual colours and side hinged doors take longer to manufacture, and we'll give you a lead time with your quote.

Do I need planning permission for a new garage door?▾

Replacing a garage door like for like normally doesn't need planning permission. It can be different on listed buildings, in conservation areas or where planning conditions apply to your estate, so check with North Lincolnshire Council or Hull City Council if that applies to you.

What warranty do you give on a new garage door?▾

All our installation work comes with a minimum 1 year warranty, and the door manufacturer's own guarantee applies on top.
