Scunthorpe grew up around iron and steel. About 1,245 people lived here in 1851 and more than 45,000 by 1941, as Ashby, Brumby, Crosby and Frodingham joined into one town. Bottesford went the same way later: a farming village of around 300 people in 1921, it is home to more than 11,000 today. So the housing is mixed, with older streets close to the centre and big twentieth-century estates on the south and east sides.
